December 2005
The deadline is coming soon to register for
the 2004
IAPA Awards for Journalistic Excellence -February 1st.
The best journalism that is produced each year
in the Americas is presented at the annual General Assembly of the Inter
American Press Association (IAPA).
The IAPA is an organization with a membership
of more than 1,300 publications that for more than 60 years has been dedicated
to defending and nourish freedom of the press in the Western Hemisphere.
The competition for the annual IAPA awards
is unparalleled in the industry.
Newspapers and news agencies of some 33 nations
of North, Central and South America and the Caribbean submit their best
works in English, Spanish or Portuguese to the IAPA headquarters in Miami
by the contest deadline of February 1.
The adjudicating panel - made up of newspaper
editors and publishers from the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Chile,
Jamaica, among others - evaluates the entries in any of the three languages
and chooses winners during the IAPA Midyear Meeting. The winners later receive
diplomas and cash prizes of up to $2,000, presented during the General Assembly
held the following October.
Awards are made in 10 categories, including
inter-American relations, human rights, news coverage, features, in-depth
reporting, photography, cartoons, infographics, opinion and the newspaper
in education.
Also awarded is a special prize called the
IAPA Grand Prize for Freedom of the Press, given to a person or organization
that has made outstanding efforts on behalf of freedom of the press in the
Western Hemisphere. In previous years, journalists from Colombia and Cuba
have received the award collectively for their defense of this freedom.
The prize has also been awarded to individuals, such as Jesús Blancornelas
of Mexico for his commitment to publishing the truth about criminal organizations
at his own personal risk.
A publication need not be a member of the IAPA
to take part in the contest, although we do encourage all the publications
to assess our mission with a view to becoming a member. An essential requirement
for entry is that the submitted work must have been published in 2003.
Sincerely,
