WHEREAS in the past six months two journalists were killed, another eighteen were threatened in various regions of the country, and two more went into exile WHEREAS FARC guerrilla forces blew up a radio station, transmission towers for the RCN and Caracol networks in the Putumayo department, and exploded a car bomb at the RCN radio and television offices in Cali WHEREAS Principle 4 of the Declaration of Chapultepec states, ?Freedom of expression and of the press are severely limited by murder, terrorism, kidnapping, pressure, intimidation, the unjust imprisonment of journalists, the destruction of facilities, violence of any kind and impunity for perpetrators. Such acts must be investigated promptly and punished harshly" THE MIDYEAR MEETING OF THE IAPA RESOLVES to request the government and its civilian and military authorities implement effective security measures to ensure the free exercise of journalistic activities, imperiled today by a generalized climate of threats to urge the Office of the Attorney General to investigate and punish those responsible for violations of freedom of the press.
