WHEREAS
currently making its way through Congress is a bill that would restrict access to information, because it proposed secret and confidentiality and would set up categories for restricting access to public records
WHEREAS
Congress is considering five amendments to Law 80, which would allow the government to determine the procedures for announcing calls for bids on behalf of government entities
WHEREAS
a bill was reintroduced that would make it a criminal offense for an editor, reporter, columnist, or feature writer to publish any defamatory, unfounded, or questionable statement
WHEREAS
Article 3 of the Declaration of Chapultepec states: “The authorities must be compelled by law to make available in a timely and reasonable manner the information generated by the public sector. No journalist may be forced to reveal his or her sources of information”
THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE IAPA RESOLVES
to urge the Colombian Congress not to consider any law that would violate the Colombian tradition of respect for freedom of the press, the Constitution, pluralism in the news, and the financial independence of the media.
