WHEREAS
twenty-five journalists were threatened in various parts of the country, and three journalists went into exile, including the producer of “Noticias UNO,” Daniel Coronel, and his wife, anchorwoman María Cristina Uribe
WHEREAS
the FARC guerrilla organization blew up five radio station transmission towers in the departments of Caquetá, Putumayo and Cauca
WHEREAS
Principle 4 of the Declaration of Chapultepec states: “Freedom of expression and of the press are severely limited by murder, terrorism, kidnapping, pressure, intimidation, the unjust imprisonment of journalists, the destruction of facilities, violence of any kind and impunity for perpetrators. Such acts must be investigated promptly and punished harshly”
THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE IAPA RESOLVES
to request that the Colombian government and its civilian and military authorities ensure the safety of journalists working outside the capital and implement security measures near media facilities in order to ensure that journalists may freely perform their work
to urge the Colombian Office of the Attorney General to investigate and punish those responsible for threatening journalists, and to promptly find and punish those who threatened the producer of “Noticias UNO,” Daniel Coronel, who was forced to leave the country
to ask the Colombian government to ensure the freedom of information regarding the negotiations with groups operating outside the law and to abide by the lawful right to gain access to diverse sources of information.
