The Impunity Project, launched in 1995, has as its principal objective the reduction of the impunity surrounding the majority of crimes against journalists.
A determining factor for the success of the Project is the generous and unrestricted financial support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which has provided a total of $7.7 million between 1992 and 2011 to the anti-impunity campaign and the press freedom program.
The main action strategies of the Impunity Project are:
Education: through the dispatch of missions to problem locations and in resolutions and special petitions;
Investigation: through the investigative reporters of IAPA’s Rapid Response Unit;
Promotion: through a public advertising campaign in print and online media to shed light concerning impunity and demand justice;
Training: through seminars and conferences to help reporters reduce the risks to them in covering the news.
